What's inside, counted

Ten kinds of gear for two people. We count the gear pouch as one item, not thirty, so the list says what you actually get.

  1. 1BackpackCarries everything. It isn't sold on its own, so it's left out of the savings math.
  2. 1Hand-crank solar weather radioAM/FM and the NOAA weather band. Runs on sun, crank or battery, and charges a phone over USB.
  3. 1Survival gear pouchMulti-tool with a small blade, flashlight, compass, whistle, paracord and first-aid basics.
  4. 2Water filter strawsHollow-fiber membrane filters for drinking from fresh water sources like lakes and streams.
  5. 2Datrex 3,600-calorie food rations18 bars of 200 calories in each pack, 7,200 calories in all. Contains wheat.
  6. 12Datrex water pouches125 mL each, 1.5 liters in all. Sealed, with a 5-year shelf life per the manufacturer.
  7. 4Emergency blanketsPocket-size and single-use. They reflect body heat back to you. Two each.
  8. 1USB-C rechargeable headlampHands-free light, with red light and SOS modes. No batteries to go dead in a drawer.
  9. 1Ferro rod fire starterSparks wet or dry. A no-fuel backup to matches and lighters.
  10. 2Document and phone dry bags2-liter roll-top bags for IDs, insurance papers, cash and a phone.

The honest numbers

Plenty of kits say "72 hours" and leave the math to you. Here it is.

Food

1,200 cal

per person, per day, for 3 days. That's emergency-ration level, which is what these bars are made for. Add pantry food at home if you have it.

Water

1.5 L sealed

plus 2 filter straws for fresh water sources. That's a carry-along backup, not a 3-day supply. The usual guide is about a gallon per person per day, so keep stored water at home.

Power and light

3 ways

to run the radio: sun, crank or battery. Cranking tops up the battery for a call or a text; it isn't a quick full phone charge. Plus one rechargeable headlamp.

Who it's for

It's a starting kit for two adults. Here's where it fits and where it doesn't.

A good fit

  • Two people at home, in an apartment or splitting time between home and car.
  • Places where floods, tornadoes or ice storms can mean leaving in a hurry.
  • Anyone who'd rather buy one thing, know it's done and put it in the closet.
  • A practical gift for parents or a couple setting up a first home.

Not the right fit

  • A full 3-day water supply. Store water at home; this bag carries a backup.
  • A medical kit. The first-aid supplies are basics like bandages and wipes.
  • Schools or workplaces that don't allow blades. The multi-tool has a small one.
  • Households of three or four, as it comes. The top-up below covers that.

Packing for three or four?

Add two more filter straws, two more 3,600-calorie rations and four more blankets, so everyone has their own.

Questions

Is the water enough for 72 hours?

No, and we won't pretend it is. The 12 sealed pouches hold 1.5 liters, and the two filter straws need a fresh water source. Plan on about a gallon per person per day of stored water at home, and treat the bag as what you carry if you have to leave.

Is the food enough for two people?

For three days at emergency-ration level, yes: 7,200 calories works out to 1,200 per person per day. It's meant to keep you going, not to replace regular meals. The bars contain wheat.

Does the radio give weather alerts?

It receives NOAA weather radio broadcasts on its weather band, so you can tune in for forecasts and warnings. We don't advertise automatic alert tones for this model. Keep your phone's emergency alerts turned on too.

Is it FEMA approved?

No kit is. FEMA and NOAA don't approve or certify products. We built the bag around the commonly recommended 72-hour basics: water, food, light, warmth, first aid and a way to hear the news.

Is there a knife in it?

Yes. The survival gear pouch has a multi-tool with a small blade, scissors and pliers. If you're keeping the bag at a school or workplace, check the rules there.

How long does the food and water last?

Five years from the date of manufacture, per the manufacturer. The date is printed on each pack. Charge the radio and headlamp every few months.

Can I swap items out?

Not yet. You can add extras, like a second headlamp or more water pouches, in your cart before checkout.

When will it arrive?

Leaves our US warehouse in 2 business days. Delivery usually takes a few more business days after that. You'll get tracking by email.

What if I change my mind?

Return unused gear within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Email us with your order number and we'll send return instructions.
